SIP spam (= junk messages in the SIP data packet) has exploded in recent years from a program called SIPVICIOUS. It comes from Google, which posted it on it's website for the testing of different SIP devices. It can be used for such things as stress tests and crack SIP password. One can, unfortunately, use it for questionable purposes. An example of such an objective is to make free calls, then sell this free access to anyone who wants to call a lot or just make phonecalls as payment.

Allan eC videophone users are today not able to make IP-calls to a regular phone, e.g. Internet to voice telephone in the telephone network, so the risk is assessed as very low to get unexpected phone bills. There is more at risk for IP telephony users with voice telephone in this case (eg, Bredbandsbolaget, Freeserve, Telia and others).

The Swedish firewall manufacturer Intertex has built a number of protection that can be set up against similar attacks in the future. The most common SIP scanners are automatically stopped in the latest release of Intertex SIP Firewall IX78 from v.5.30. This SIPspam protection is not in the older model IX67 firewall v.5.10 which means that it can not manage to process a large number of SIP messages when exposed to a SIP spam attack. A user with Allan eC behind such IX67 firewall, can get a "busytone" all the time when he / she tries to make a call.

There are two possible solutions to this problem today:

1. Replace the IX67 SIP Firewall with the new IX78 SIP Firewall

A solution to this problem is to replace the IX67 to a IX78 SIP with spam protection enabled. IX78 is faster and has better technical performance than IX67. We recommend this solution in the first place.

2. Upgrading IX67 SIP Firewall to the latest version (2011-01-28)

Intertex has been commissioned by Omnitor to develop a new software for IX67 which was released on 17 January 2011. It contains the same SIP-spam protection available for the IX78. The new version is called 5.10x and can be downloaded via the Upgrade button from the web interface for IX67 or http://www.igmanual.com.
